The Yanmar 6BY3-160 is a 160 mhp (117 kW) 3.0-litre six-cylinder BMW-derived common-rail turbo diesel with a reduced 2800 rpm rating, listed by Yanmar among its sailboat and small-craft engines for inboard gear installations.
The 6BY3-160 is a derated version of the 2.993-litre six-cylinder BY3 engine, announced by Yanmar America in January 2015 alongside the common-rail 4JH45/57/80/110. Instead of the 220 and 260 mhp at 4000 rpm of the 6BY3-220 and 6BY3-260, it delivers 160 mhp at 2800 rpm, which suits heavier displacement boats and large sailing yachts; yanmarmarine.com listed it under sailboat and small-craft engines rather than powerboat engines.
It shares the BY3's bore and stroke (84 x 90 mm), Bosch common-rail injection, turbocharger with charge-air cooler and 328 kg dry weight. Yanmar's datasheet shows it with the Kanzaki KMH51A gear and lists KMH50A and KMH50V gears; no sterndrive (Z) version was found. It came with Yanmar's full NMEA 2000 CAN-bus control system as standard, with an optional 24 V / 90 A secondary alternator.
Like the rest of the BY family it was superseded by the 4LV series, which Yanmar also targets at sailing yachts over 50 ft.
