D3-220
The Volvo Penta D3-220 is a 2.4-litre inline five-cylinder marine diesel rated at 220 hp (162 kW) crankshaft power at 4000 rpm. It was the most powerful D3 ever built, arriving with the 2009 update to the range.
The D3-220 topped the D3 range from the 2009 update onward, extracting 220 hp from 2.4 litres - close to 92 hp per litre, and the reason Volvo Penta sold the D3 on power-to-weight rather than displacement. The hardware is the family's: aluminium cylinder block with integrated bed plate and aluminium head, double overhead camshafts, four valves per cylinder with hydraulic lash adjusters, cast-in grey iron liners, six-bearing crankshaft, 1800 bar common-rail injection with piezo-electric injectors, variable-geometry turbocharger and EVC-C electronic shift and throttle. It was offered as an inboard on the HS45AE reverse gear or the HS63IVE V-drive, and as an Aquamatic Duoprop sterndrive package on the DPS drive with the range's tallest 1.78:1 ratio. Volvo Penta never built an IPS pod package on the D3, so the D3-220 remains a shaft-or-sterndrive engine.
