Volvo Penta Marine engine

KAD43

In production 1997–2005

The Volvo Penta KAD43 is a 230 hp, 3.6-litre six-cylinder diesel with both a mechanical charge-air compressor and a turbocharger, sold as a complete Aquamatic sterndrive package with the DP-E Duoprop drive.

KAD43 replaced the KAD42 from 1997 as Volvo Penta's compressor-charged diesel sterndrive: still 3.6 litres and six cylinders, still rated 230 hp, but revised around the compressor and aftercooler and matched to the DP-E Duoprop drive at a 1.78:1 ratio. The belt-driven compressor supplies boost at low revs and while accelerating, with the exhaust turbocharger taking over once boost has built - the combination is what gives these engines their reputation for petrol-like throttle response. Sold as KAD43A and KAD43P until the common-rail D6 generation arrived in the mid 2000s, it is a very common designation in Finnish and Swedish listings, and the compressor, its silencers and the aftercooler are what a survey should focus on.
