D3-170
The Volvo Penta D3-170 is a 2.4-litre inline five-cylinder marine diesel rated at 170 hp (125 kW) crankshaft power at 4000 rpm. It was the entry inboard sport rating of the updated D3 range and the successor to the D3-160.
The D3-170 arrived with the 2009 update to the D3 and replaced the 163 hp D3-160, sitting below the 200 and 220 in the reorganised sport block. The update brought 1800 bar common-rail injection with piezo-electric injectors, EVC-C with electronic shift and throttle, a 180 A alternator and US EPA Tier 3 compliance, on the same aluminium-block, twin-cam, four-valve, variable-geometry-turbo five-cylinder as before. It was sold both as a straight inboard on a Volvo Penta reverse gear - the HS45AE, or the HS63IVE V-drive - and as an Aquamatic Duoprop sterndrive package on the DPS drive, so the drive is a property of the pairing rather than of the engine. Volvo Penta never built an IPS pod package on the D3.
