KAD44

In production 1997–2004

The Volvo Penta KAD44 is the 260 hp top of the compressor-charged 3.6-litre six-cylinder family, a 24-valve, electronically governed diesel sold as an Aquamatic sterndrive package with the DP-E Duoprop drive.

KAD44 is the most powerful of Volvo Penta's classic compressor-charged sterndrive diesels: the familiar 3.6-litre six, but with four-valve cylinder heads, a lower 16.5:1 compression ratio and EDC electronic diesel control governing both the injection pump and the compressor, which the EDC unit runs as a torque controller. Rated 191 kW (260 hp) at 3800 rpm with the DP-E drive, it was sold from 1997 in P, P-A, P-B and P-C revisions - including a KAD44P EDC Professional commercial version - until the common-rail D6 replaced the family. It is the designation to look for on faster 1990s and early-2000s Nordic sterndrive cruisers, and the one where a compressor or EDC fault costs the most to put right.
