D3-110

The D3-110 sat at the bottom of Volvo Penta's D3, the compact all-aluminium five-cylinder derived from Volvo Cars' 2.4-litre diesel and launched for marine use in 2003-2004. It shares the family's aluminium block with integrated bed plate, double overhead camshafts, four valves per cylinder with hydraulic lash adjusters, six-bearing crankshaft, common-rail injection and variable-geometry turbocharger, but is tuned to a rated speed of 3000 rpm rather than the 4000 rpm of the sport ratings, which made it a displacement and semi-displacement engine rather than a planing-boat one. It was sold only as a straight inboard on a Volvo Penta reverse gear - the HS25A in the first phase, the HS25AE after the 2009 update that brought EVC-C electronic shift and throttle, a 180 A alternator and US EPA Tier 3 compliance. Volvo Penta never built a D3 sterndrive below 140 hp and never built a D3 IPS package, so the 110 is a shaft engine.
