D1-20
The Volvo Penta D1-20 is a 0.76-litre naturally aspirated three-cylinder marine diesel rated at 18.8 hp (13.8 kW) crankshaft power. One of the most common sailboat auxiliaries in Nordic used-boat listings, it is sold with either a mechanical reverse gear or the 130S saildrive.
The D1-20 is the middle rating of Volvo Penta's D1 range and the direct successor to the MD2020. It is a freshwater-cooled, naturally aspirated inline three-cylinder on the same cast-iron industrial block family as the D1-13 and D1-30, with mechanical in-line injection, glow plugs and a 115 A alternator, rated across a 2800-3200 rpm band. It is the standard auxiliary in a very large number of 28-32 ft production cruisers, which is why it turns up constantly on the Nordic brokerage market. Installations are either shaft drive through an MS10A/MS10L reverse gear or the 130S saildrive, with electrical isolation between engine and leg on the saildrive version. Later letter revisions cover emissions certification and detail changes, not power, and are treated here as one engine.
