D6-280
The Volvo Penta D6-280 is the entry rating of the first-generation D6, a 5.5-litre common-rail inline-six marine diesel rated 206 kW (280 hp) at the crankshaft. It is turbocharged and aftercooled, without the belt-driven supercharger fitted to the higher ratings.
The D6-280 sat at the bottom of Volvo Penta's first-generation D6 range, the 5.5-litre inline-six that replaced the older KAD/TAMD sixes and was designed from the outset as a marine engine with common-rail injection, double overhead camshafts, four valves per cylinder and a rear-end camshaft drive. At 206 kW (280 hp) it breathes through a freshwater-cooled turbocharger and aftercooler only; the mechanically driven compressor that gives the 350/400/435 their low-end punch is absent. Volvo Penta's own product sheet documents it as an inboard shaft package with the HS63AE, HS63IVE or HS80IVE hydraulically shifted reverse gear, V-drive included, all controlled over the EVC (Electronic Vessel Control) CAN bus. The whole first-generation D6 family was superseded by the 2021 D6 refresh (D6-340/380/440/480).
