Volvo Penta Marine engine
D4-IPS400
In production 2005–present
The Volvo Penta D4-IPS400 is an IPS pod-drive package built on the 300 hp D4, a 3.7-litre four-cylinder common-rail diesel with turbo and supercharger, and is the top D4-based rung of the IPS ladder.
The D4-IPS400 pairs the 221 kW (300 hp) rating of Volvo Penta's 3.7-litre in-line four D4 with the IPS forward-facing pod drive. The 400 is a claimed inboard-shaft performance equivalence, not crankshaft power — the engine itself makes 300 hp. It is sold for twin and multiple installations in planing hulls and belongs to the original IPS generation introduced in 2005. Above it the ladder switches to the six-cylinder D6.
