TAMD31

I produktion 1988–2005

The Volvo Penta TAMD31 is a 2.4-litre four-cylinder turbocharged and aftercooled marine diesel, the shaft-drive inboard member of the 30-series and a mainstay of Nordic semi-planing craft from the late 1980s into the 2000s.

The TAMD31 is the turbocharged, aftercooled version of Volvo Penta's 2.4-litre four-cylinder 30-series block, sold as a shaft inboard with an HS45A reverse gear rather than as a sterndrive package. It ran through a long series of letter revisions - TAMD31A, B and D through the late 1980s and 1990s, then the final L, M and P ratings sold alongside the 40-series into the early 2000s - with output ranging from 110 hp on the low-rated TAMD31M to 150 hp on the TAMD31P. All share the same 92/90 mm bore and stroke, cast-iron block, wet liners and direct injection. It matters on the used market because it is the small, mechanically injected, electronics-free diesel behind an enormous number of Nordic cabin boats and small trawlers, and because parts and workshop knowledge are still widely available.
