Volvo Penta Marinmotor

MD2020

I produktion 1995–2005

The Volvo Penta MD2020 is a 19 hp three-cylinder freshwater-cooled marine diesel, the volume seller of the 2000-series and one of the most common auxiliaries in 28-32 foot Nordic cruising sailboats built in the late 1990s.

A naturally aspirated in-line three of 0.68 litres, bore 67 mm and stroke 64 mm, giving 13.8 kW (19 hp) crankshaft at 3200-3600 rpm. It was sold in A, B, C and D revisions with the MS10A or MS10L reverse gear for shaft drive or with the MS25S saildrive, and it became the standard fit for a whole generation of production cruisers from Bavaria, Beneteau, Jeanneau, Maxi and Hallberg-Rassy. The three-cylinder layout makes it noticeably smoother than the twin-cylinder MD2010, and its light weight and compact block let builders put real auxiliary power in a small hull. It was replaced by the D1-20 and D1-30. On the used market it is a safe engine to buy into: parts are current, most yards know it, and its weak points - saildrive diaphragm age, heat exchanger scaling, the raw-water impeller - are all cheap and well documented.
