D2-40
The Volvo Penta D2-40 is a 1.51-litre naturally aspirated four-cylinder marine diesel rated at 39.6 hp (29.1 kW) crankshaft power. It is the smallest D2 and effectively a four-cylinder D1-30, sold for shaft drive with an MS15 reverse gear or with the 130S saildrive.
The D2-40 bridges the D1 and D2 ranges: it shares the D1 family's 77 x 81 mm bore and stroke and 23.5:1 compression, but adds a fourth cylinder for 1.51 litres, and like the D1s it revs to a 2800-3200 rpm band rather than the 2700-3000 rpm of the larger 2.2-litre D2s. It is freshwater cooled with a mechanical in-line injection pump, glow plugs and a 115 A alternator, and is a common auxiliary in 33-38 ft cruising sailboats and in small motor cruisers. Shaft installations use the MS15A or MS15L reverse gear; the saildrive version uses the 130S leg. Letter revisions run through the emissions steps and do not change the rating.
