D3-160

I produktion 2004–2009

The Volvo Penta D3-160 is a 2.4-litre inline five-cylinder marine diesel rated by its maker at 163 hp (120 kW) crankshaft power at 4000 rpm despite the 160 in its name. It was the middle sport rating of the first-phase D3 range and was superseded by the D3-170 in 2009.

The D3-160 was the engine Volvo Penta led the D3's 2004 launch with, announced as a sport diesel with Duoprop drive and pitched on a power-to-weight ratio close to a petrol engine's. It has the D3 family's all-aluminium block and head with integrated bed plate, cast-in grey iron liners, double overhead camshafts, four valves per cylinder, six-bearing crankshaft, two-mass flywheel, common-rail injection and a variable-geometry turbocharger with aftercooler. It was sold as an Aquamatic Duoprop sterndrive package on the DP-S and later DPS drive and as an inboard on the HS45A reverse gear, with EVC electronic vessel control on mechanical shift and throttle in the first phase. The 2009 update replaced it with the D3-170.
