Mercury

Mercury is Brunswick Corporation's marine-engine division, headquartered in Fond du Lac, Wisconsin. It builds petrol and electric outboards, the MerCruiser sterndrive and inboard line, Mercury Diesel, and Mercury Racing high-performance engines.

Elmer Carl Kiekhaefer bought bankrupt Cedarburg Manufacturing in Cedarburg, Wisconsin, on 22 January 1939. The plant held leftover outboards; he rebuilt and sold them and entered the outboard business under the Mercury name in 1940. Production moved to Fond du Lac in 1946, which remains the headquarters campus. Kiekhaefer sold the company to Brunswick Corporation on 1 August 1961. The division was renamed Mercury Marine in the early 1970s and is still a Brunswick division. Current petrol outboard families are FourStroke (2.5–300 hp), Verado (250–600 hp, including the 7.6 L V12 600 introduced in 2021), Pro XS (115–300 hp) and commercial SeaPro. Mercury Racing covers high-performance outboards and sterndrives. Avator is the electric-outboard line. MerCruiser is Mercury's sterndrive and petrol-inboard brand, not a separate company — its engines and drives are profiled under the MerCruiser make. Mariner was a second outboard brand launched in 1974 and is absent from the current US catalog.
