MD2030
The Volvo Penta MD2030 is a 29 hp three-cylinder freshwater-cooled marine diesel, the mid-size 2000-series auxiliary fitted to 32-38 foot cruising sailboats from the mid-1990s.
A naturally aspirated in-line three of 0.95 litres, bore 75 mm and stroke 72 mm, rated 20.9 kW (29 hp) crankshaft at 3200-3600 rpm, sold in A, B, C and D revisions with the MS10A/MS10L reverse gear or the MS25S saildrive. It is the engine most Nordic ads mean when they say a 1990s cruiser has 'a 28-hp Volvo' - the 28 hp figure quoted is the propeller-shaft rating, the crankshaft rating is 29. It sits in a very large number of Bavaria, Dehler, Hallberg-Rassy, Najad and Maxi hulls of that era and was succeeded by the D1-30. Mechanically it is straightforward and well supported; the things that decide its value in a used boat are saildrive diaphragm and boot age, heat-exchanger condition and whether the engine has been run hard enough to keep it clean.
