It is the engine most Nordic ads mean when they say a 1990s cruiser has 'a 28-hp Volvo' - the 28 hp figure quoted is the propeller-shaft rating, the crankshaft rating is 29. It sits in a very large number of Bavaria, Dehler, Hallberg-Rassy, Najad and Maxi hulls of that era and was succeeded by the D1-30. Mechanically it is straightforward and well supported; the things that decide its value in a used boat are saildrive diaphragm and boot age, heat-exchanger condition and whether the engine has been run hard enough to keep it clean.
