Volvo Penta Venemoottori

MD2040

Tuotannossa 1995–2005

The Volvo Penta MD2040 is a 40 hp three-cylinder freshwater-cooled marine diesel, the largest of the 2000-series auxiliaries and the standard engine of 37-42 foot cruising sailboats from the late 1990s.

A naturally aspirated in-line three of 1.5 litres, bore 84 mm and stroke 90 mm, producing 29.1 kW (40 hp) crankshaft at 3200-3600 rpm and driving through the larger MS15A/MS15L reverse gear or the MS25S saildrive. It shares its control layout, cooling scheme and service pattern with the rest of the 2000-series but uses a bigger block, which is why its weight roughly doubles the MD2020's. In Nordic ads it appears in larger production cruisers and small motorsailers of the late 1990s and early 2000s, and it was replaced by the D2-40, which is closely related. It is a common note in listings that the MD2040 is a four-cylinder engine of about 2 litres - it is not; the Volvo data sheet gives three cylinders and 1.5 litres.
