Volvo Penta Venemoottori

MD22

The Volvo Penta MD22 is a 50 hp four-cylinder, 2.0-litre freshwater-cooled marine diesel from the 1990s, the top of the pre-D-series sailboat and small-cruiser inboard range.

A naturally aspirated in-line four of 2.0 litres, bore 84 mm and stroke 89 mm, giving 36.5 kW (50 hp) crankshaft at 2600-3000 rpm, with an overhead camshaft and freshwater cooling as standard. It was sold through the 1990s and early 2000s in several forms - MD22L and MD22P with the HS/MS reverse gears or the 120S saildrive - and the same block also underpins the turbocharged TMD22 and TAMD22, which are the versions found in small planing cruisers. In Nordic ads the MD22 is the standard auxiliary of 36-42 foot cruising sailboats of that period, including many Hallberg-Rassy and Najad hulls, and it is the direct ancestor of the D2-55 that replaced it. It is a modern enough design to be genuinely liveable - quiet by classic-MD standards, with a real alternator and proper instrumentation.
