Azimut 40 S

In production 2009–2015 Designed by Stefano Righini

The 40S was the smallest model in Azimut's S Collection, a sport line built around an enclosed hardtop saloon instead of a flybridge. Sold from around 2009 until 2015, it carried two cabins and two heads on a 12.24 m hull, drove twin 480 mhp Cummins diesels through conventional shafts, and was aimed at owners wanting flybridge-style interior comfort in a sportscruiser.

Azimut divides its production into ranges, and the S Collection is the sport line: hulls tuned for cruising in the high twenties and low thirties, low profiles, and the square midship hull-side windows that mark the family. Where the Flybridge Collection puts an upper helm and a sun deck on the roof, S Collection boats either delete the flybridge entirely or fold a small sportsbridge into the sheer. The 40S sits at the bottom of that range and takes the simplest option: it has no bridge at all, only a fixed hardtop with an electric sunroof over a fully enclosed saloon. Exterior lines are by Stefano Righini, who styled most of the Azimut range of the period; the interior is credited to Carlo Galeazzi.

The boat was introduced at the end of the 2000s and stayed in the catalogue until the middle of the following decade. Sources disagree on the exact window. Yachtbuyer gives 2009 to 2015 with 39 hulls built, while itBoat records 2010 to 2013; the difference is most likely between first public showing and last delivery, and the 2009-2015 span is used here as the wider of the two. It was replaced in the range by the Atlantis-derived and later S models rather than by a direct successor at the same length.

Accommodation is two cabins and two heads. The owner's cabin is forward with an island berth, the guest cabin amidships with two singles, and each has its own compartment with a shower; the layout is conventional for the size, and the space that would be a third cabin on some competitors is given over to the saloon. That saloon is the boat's argument: it is carpeted and trimmed in leather to a standard normally seen on a larger flybridge yacht, lit by the long side windows, with a compact galley and a dinette. Reviewers of the period described it as a flybridge boat's interior without the flybridge. The cockpit is correspondingly short, and testers noted the seat base there as tight.

Construction is glass-reinforced polyester for both hull and superstructure. Azimut is well known for carbon-fibre superstructures, but the models that use them in this period are the larger S Collection boats such as the 72S and the later Seadeck series; published specifications for the 40S list only GRP, and no source found here supports a carbon superstructure on this model. That claim should be treated as false unless a builder document says otherwise.

One engine package was offered: twin Cummins QSB 5.9 rated 480 mhp at 3,400 rpm, driving conventional shafts through V-drives. Despite frequent assumptions to the contrary, the 40S was not an IPS or Zeus boat. Azimut instead fitted the Xenta joystick system, which coordinates the shaft engines and the bow thruster for low-speed handling, and marketed it explicitly as an alternative to pod drives. Published test speeds cluster between 32 and 35 knots at the top and around 28 to 30 knots cruising, with a range near 250 nautical miles. The RCD certification is Category B.
