Nord West 420 Flybridge
The Nord West 420 Flybridge is a 44ft (13.5m) three-cabin flybridge cruiser designed by Benny Martinsson and built from 2005 to 2012. It was one of the first flybridge boats designed for Volvo Penta IPS pods, and won the British Motor Boat of the Year award for flybridges under 50ft in both 2007 and 2008.
The 420 had its world premiere at the Scandinavian Boat Show in Stockholm in November 2005, where it was named Motorboat of the Show. It followed the 390 and the 560 Flybridge. According to Nord West's own figures, as reported by PowerYacht, more than a hundred were sold, and the model stayed in production until 2012. It was then replaced by the 430 Flybridge, which uses a refined version of the same hull.
The designer was Benny Martinsson, Nord West's owner. The hull is a planing vee in GRP sandwich with a Divinycell core. It is 12.8m long without the pulpit and slightly narrower than was usual for the class. Because the IPS pods sit further aft than shafts, the lower deck could take three double cabins with no bunks, which PowerYacht called nearly impossible on a 13m boat in 2005. The owner's cabin forward has an island double and its own bathroom. Two similar double cabins amidships share a second bathroom with a shower stall of the same size. The saloon is level with the cockpit, and an integrated staircase leads to a flybridge with a central helm and a U-shaped settee.
The launch power range was twin Volvo Penta D6 diesels of 310 to 370hp, on IPS or Volvo's then-new DP sterndrive. PowerYacht lists the later options as twin D6-370s on sterndrives or IPS 500, or twin 435hp D6s on IPS 600 only. The sterndrive boat was the fastest, at 36 knots with a best cruise of 26 knots, against 35 knots for IPS 600 and 32 knots for IPS 500. The yard's figures suggest the sterndrive was also the most economical.
Motor Boat & Yachting and Motor Boats Monthly made it Motor Boat of the Year in the flybridge-under-50ft class in 2007 and again in 2008. PowerYacht reported that no other boat had won that award twice. Reviewers singled out its sports-boat handling, especially with IPS.
