Nord West 390 F
The Nord West 390 Flybridge is a 39ft (11.9m) Swedish flybridge motor cruiser designed by Benny Martinsson and built by Nord West Yachts at Vindön on Orust from 2000. It was also built as the 390 Coupé without a flybridge; 171 were built across both versions, mostly with twin Volvo Penta diesels on sterndrives.
The 390 was shown in autumn 2000 at the Stockholm boat show, where it won Motorboat of the Show, and became one of Nord West's most successful models: 171 were built in flybridge and coupé form. Motor Boat & Yachting gives the build period as 2000-2007, which the designer's sales firm Benny & Jessica also uses in its listings, while the model page on that site and the production list Nord West published in 2012 give 2000-2009. The Coupé is the same boat without a flybridge. It has the same layout and the same two large opening skylights over the saloon, and is lower: 4.2m to the top of the radar arch against 4.7m for the Flybridge.
The design is by Benny Martinsson, Nord West's owner. The hull is GRP sandwich with a foam core. A saloon with a U-shaped settee and a starboard galley sits level with the cockpit. Below are a forward owner's cabin with an island double and up to two guest cabins, with a choice of layouts for two or three cabins and four to six berths. All cabins share one bathroom with a separate shower stall; some boats were built with a second WC in a guest cabin. The flybridge has a central helm with L-shaped seating aft and is reached by a steep ladder from the cockpit. MBY found more stowage than on any other 40ft boat it could think of.
Engines were twin Volvo Penta diesels, on sterndrives or shafts. Skippo's 2000 launch report gave a power range of 2 x 230-420hp and priced the boat with twin 260hp KAD 44s. Later boats had Volvo Penta D6s of 310 or 350hp. MBY believed the 390 was the largest flybridge cruiser then available with sterndrives. Its March 2005 test boat, with twin 350hp D6s on sterndrives, reached 35.4 knots and cruised most efficiently at 31.5 knots, using 3.3 litres per nautical mile. The designer's current model page also lists IPS pods as an option.
MBY's 2023 used-boat report called it the Saab of the seas: very solidly built, with good seakeeping and exceptional joinery, criticised only for its narrow, unprotected side-deck access. Nord West stopped building boats when the company went into administration in February 2013.
